About MeI have recently moved back to the West Country, having worked in London for many years. I tend to define myself mostly in terms of what I don't like culturally about Torbay, eg. shopping, pubs and restaurants and anything that requires endlessly forking out in order to pass the time and legitimise my existence. I'm a vegetarian, leftish (but not totalist or tribalist) who likes the fresh air and simple things in life. I walk a lot and try to cycle when I can, but mostly I just read. I'm currently trying to find the enthusiasm to write something of my own now I'm free of many of the intolerable pressures and murderous impulses I was subjected to whilst living in London beyond my sell-by date. More About MeLocation: Torquay, Devon, England Occupation: sociology student My Philosophy On Life: Nothing out of the ordinary comes to mind at the moment which doesn't sound crass or pretentious. Although I suppose I really ought to speak up for the animals. My Interests: Ecology, history, writing, books, film, country walks, vegetarian cooking. My Inspirations: Those in pursuit of world peace, equality and communitarianism, I suppose. Music I Love: Don't have as much time for music as I once had. But I did recently buy Thea Gilmore's album, Avalanche, and started listening to Bob Dylan quite late in life. Movies I Love: Too many to mention, my tastes are quite diverse. I've just watched Sin City with Micky Rourke and Bruce Willis, which pretty much reflects my sentiments about urban living at the moment. TV Shows I Love: Dr Who, Newsnight, arts and history programmes, documentaries, and anything about health and nutrition at the moment. I watch Jonathon Ross on Fridays, although I really do hate him, it's a kind of aversion therapy, I guess. Books I Love: I belong to two bookclubs, so I read quite a lot of contemporary fiction that I wouldn't otherwise be exposed to. I've just read Our Winter of Discontent by John Steinbeck and, at the Museum bookclub, we are reading 19th Century novels such as The French Lieutenent's Woman and Tristam Shandy, which I haven't really looked at before. Other than that, I read quite a lot of sociological studies on deviance and dysfunction and their various social constructions. But at the moment I am reading a comprehensive history of brainwashing and mind manipulation techniques which is most enlightening. The most memorable books I've read this year are 'Lifelines: biology, freedom, determinism' by Steven Rose and I'm just about to read David Wootton's History of Medicine: 'Bad Medicine, Doctors Doing Harm Since Classical Greece'. Places I Love: Torbay, having run away from the hell that is living in London in 2004. I don't travel much now because I don't have the means or that much inclination, to be honest. Quotes I Love: "Capitalists will give us the rope with which they can be hung". (It's not by favourite quote by a long shot, but the only one I have written inside my diary today).
