Hi there you could try one of the following for Indian Head Massage,
Sweet Almond Oil - High in nutrients and promotes hair growth while protecting and conditioning
Mustard Oil - Good for producing heat, reduces pain, breaks down congestion, reduces swelling and aids the drainage of the sinuses
Olive Oil - Excellent conditioner and moisturiser for dry skin and hair, good for stiffness, swelling
Sesame Oil Effective conditioner for the hair and can delay the hair from going grey! Good balancing oil
Coconut Oil Light in texture when melted and good for dry damaged hair, good for skin and helps relieve inflammation.

I tend to buy an over the counter oil that can be used for the scalp and the skin from Aveda - there are a couple of varieties, calming and energising, all my clients love either when having their Indian Head Massage.

Trust this helps you?

Best of luck

Just wondering Richard - as many of the oils you mentioned are nut based, if they can still be used for someone with a Nut allergy? Is the intake of nuts and the applying of nut based substances to the skin different? I'm just intrigued as I have never thought about it before now :)

I would steer the client away from the oils which are nut based - however someone did mention to me that Coconut was a fruit oil - to be honest I dont know about that one though. I rarely use oils when carrying out Indian Head Massage - I supose you could opt for another carrier oil if you are unsure as there are so many out there to choose from.
If in doubt I would go for olive oil - but just watch how much you use though.

Thanks

Richard

Hi there. How sensitive is your client? If the client is very sensitive then you would probably have to be careful with things like sesame seed as well as the nut oils mentioned. I haven't heard of coconut being a fruit oil but probably botanically that could be true.

Although not strictly within the Ayurvedic regime you could try sunflower - fairly hypoallergenic and neutral or jojoba - strictly a liquid wax but its lipid qualities are very close to human sebum.

Olive oil may be acceptable but choose a refined version, as extra virgin is very pungent. Also avocado is pressed from the fruit rather than the seed but again choose a refined oil.

It is worth looking at the web. There is some useful info on the Aromantic website about some of the lesser known oils, such as thistle.

Best of luck and let us know how you get on.
