Would you be surprised to hear that the average American home has more TVs than people?

Dr Joseph Mercola says: "Taking into account the epidemic of obesity along with the frightening exercise debt that's harming America's health, it's no surprise to me, based on data reported by Nielsen Media Research, the typical home has 2.55 people and 2.73 TV sets."

Is telly so bad? Aren't TVs like guns, money and drugs - neutral until used (or mis-used) by humans?

I like watching TV. And having more than one set (although I have none at the moment) is more a matter of convenience than the end of the world.

Full story at Mercola's wonderfully illuminating site: http://www.mercola.com/2006/oct/12/are-you-surprised-the-average-american-home-has-more-tvs-than-people.htm

Sure, there's nothing wrong with having a TV as long as you lock it in the closet and throw away the key... :D

Seriously, though, a few hours of TV per week here and there is not going to kill anyone or end the world, but that is not how people are watching it. In addition to the statistic above, Nielsen found that the average American watches TV for 4 hours and 35 minutes every day and that the average household has a TV playing for 8 hours and 14 minutes EVERY DAY. That does not leave much time for quality family time.

TV is relaxing and it feels good to watch, but it also puts your brain into a passive, alpha, brainwave state. It is also addictive for many people, hence the astronomical statistics above.

As for convenience, in my opinion there is something else going on when there are more TV's than people. There aren't just TV's in family rooms, plus a spare in the basement. There are TV's for the bedrooms, bathrooms (with waterproof remote), refridgerators, cell phones, cars, outdoors, and even in RV's. They are also everywhere in public too: banks, restauants, bars, grocery store check out lines, grocery carts (for kids), doctor's offices, gas stations, planes, buses. There is even a couple companies that have port-o-potties with TV's in them. That's not convenience, that's insanity!

David

You cheeky monkey.

It's all a matter of appropriateness. A gun can be useful (who will be first to ask me how?). Drugs have their place. And money is made powerful only by the meaning and intention invested in it; 'til then it's neutral.

Cars? Good in neutral at the traffic lights, bad in neutral on the motorway.

Humanity is the cosmic experiment in creation. At the moment, the Americans are leading the way in our experimentation with TV. Early results are available to anyone with eyes to see them. In the UK, we appear to be part of the debt experiment or rather the application of debt by some folks on others. Every domain has its part to play.

I say God bless the mess; because it is a mess. If you want to watch TV - go ahead, knock yourself out. If you want to do drugs that's your business (until it becomes my business - then I take appropraite action).

Thank God for Kathy reporting back. And thank God for David helping me go deeper into the subject. Thank God for blessing us with this experimental playground.

Thank God. Full stop.

Thanks, Andy and Carl, for helping get the word out about the effects of TV.

Actually, more important than the statistics is how much the TV is sucking up your time as an individual. That's why I created the TV Addiction Quiz. It allows you to get an idea of how much TV is in control of YOUR life.

When I had a TV, I would have scored an 8 or 9.

Try the TV Addiction Quiz and see how you score.
