I'm about to launch a new search engine optimisation service aimed primarily at local businesses, and I'm looking for a couple of people I will help for free just so that I can get some testimonials and prove that I can do what I say I'm going to do - which is get local businesses to the top of Google for local searches.

First of all you need to already have your own website. Second you need to find out if you rank for your primary keyword phrase in your area.

So first of all figure out what your primary keyword phrase is that people would most likely use if they were looking for the type of services you offer.

So for example if you're a massage therapist, then people are likely going to be typing "massage therapist" into Google, but obviously not just that, they're going to add a place name too.

If you were living in Oxford and you were looking for a massage therapist in Oxford then you're going to type something like "massage therapist in Oxford" or "Oxford massage therapist".

So here's what you do. Go to Google and type in "*your service* in *your town*" (don't type the quote marks).

Does your business come up on the first page? How about the 2nd or the 3rd? Is it anywhere to be found?

If you're not on the first page then get in touch with me and send me details of your website. The first couple of people to respond will get some free help! :)

Thanks
Andy

Hi Andy

A brilliant idea! I come up pretty well for kinesiology in Perth, in fact my first listing comes from HL, so you've already performed your magic!! ;)

I think I am doing pretty well. If I search......
reflexologist+market drayton there are 6 entries on 1st page
aromatherapist+market drayton there are 8 entries on 1st page

Stairway is another matter though. I expect if you put in 'health forum' or 'holistic health forum' etc it will be nowhere to be seen.

Another tip for picking the right keywords is to copy the keywords of the most successfull sites. Go to the top listing for your chosen search term, e.g. kinesiology in Perth.

Then go to "View" next to file and edit at the top left of your screen, and then go to "view source". This will bring up the code round the back of the website. Sift through the gibberish until you get to "meta-tags" and you will see what the top rating sites use as their keywords.

Its not the be all and end all of SEO but it saves you having to rely on guess work. So you will have a list of keywords that are already proven to work. The rest of the SEO stuff Andy can take care of, he's really rather good at what he does.

Peace

This is a good idea, however I wouldn't pay much attention to what's in the Keywords metatag because pretty much all search engines ignore this because of people abusing it. What you should really pay attention to is what's in the Title metatag, and also in the main headline of the page.

Ok, here's a peak at my new service before I start advertising it properly next week.

Please let me know what you think, and if there's anything you think I should mention, change, or leave out.

Thanks all

When I type in 'Kinesiology Whakatane' into Google, I am 3rd entry, both entries above me actually refer to me as well. Sorry Andy, but it is a really great idea.

I'm looking for people who can't find their website when they search for it in Google, if you already rank highly for your primary keywords, then you don't need any help.

Thanks
Andy

Ooops sorry about that Andy! I misread what you were saying, I thought you were looking for people to help you with your project. Now I understand.
