A compulsory module for anyone doing an ITEC course, but also highly recommended for any therapists starting out. This two-day workshop will teach you everything you need to know to get set up from scratch as a self-employed therapist. Not satisfied with that, we’ll show you all the necessary skills to go out and promote yourself and then we’ll provide you with ongoing support and feedback on your promotional efforts.
Your becoming a happy, healthy and successful therapist is very important to us, so where possible we’ll:
* provide opportunities to observe treatments
* put you in touch with clinics looking for therapists
* guide you towards suitable working environments for you
* put you in touch with professional marketers for development of promotional material such as brochures and websites
Course Structure
In order to cover the entire ITEC syllabus, many of the professional conduct elements are split between this course and its home study assignments and are further referred to on our massage therapy module as they are part of the practise of becoming a successful and safe therapist. These include:
* health & safety and legislation in the treatment clinic
* local authority licensing and by-laws
* professional conduct, ethics and confidentiality
* history taking and record keeping
* networking with the medical profession and other therapies
* The course is structured in a two day block and will need to be completed prior to taking ITEC’s holistic massage exam.
Learning will be supported by a comprehensive manual, which will include revision tips, details of other learning resources such as research websites, suggested books and DVD/videos to help you. It will contain all the information you will need relating to ITEC’s examination process and your tutor will guide you through what you need to know.
Course content
Within this intensive two-day module, we will also cover all the other aspects of starting out in business:
* legal requirements covering tax and national insurance
* company structures
* acts of parliament which protect us and our clients
* professional indemnity insurance for the therapist
* accounting, cash-flow, banking, record keeping and VAT
* equipment and stock, purchasing and selling
* self promotion and marketing
* As well as teaching days, students will be given a manageable number of home study assignments, important for those of you who have families and/or are working.
Entry requirements
Students must hold (or be taking concurrently) the ITEC A&P Diploma. Important: Students should note that when taking ITEC’s Unit 22 professional conduct and business awareness module, they will also need to have attended ITEC’s Holistic Massage module and take an exam in that also. The exams will be taken at the same time. Please see elsewhere on this website for details of the massage module.
Exams and Registration
There will be a one hour multiple choice exam paper set and marked by ITEC on both holistic massage and professional conduct and business awareness. They will both be taken on the same day. The fee for processing this is £90 per student and details of what this includes can be seen under the ITEC holistic massage section on this website. This is only payable if and when you want to register for the exams. We will register you for the exams and will book the exam dates to follow as soon after the end of the module as is practicable and this will allow time for your revision. You should note that if you need more time with your learning you can register and take the exams at a later date. We will be arranging exam dates twice yearly.
