The history of massage is as old as the history of Medicine and most cultures have systems of bodywork as part of their healthcare. Some of the most developed systems stem from Europe and China, with the work done in Germany in the second half of the 20th Century by pioneers such as Elisabeth Dicke, W. Kolhrausch, H. Leube and H. Head being a a very significant part of the European contribution.
Massage as an approach to alleviating stress, pain and injuries as well as improving health and fitness is generally seen as having the capacity to strengthen resistance to disease, regulate nerve function and flush tissues and by doing so improve blood circulation and make joints more flexible.
This course, offered by the Scottish College of Complementary Medicine, presents a structured system of therapeutic massage, from anatomy and physiology to the psychology of massage and the use of massage in a wide range of healthherapy situations. Taught through 9 weekend workshops over 9 months, home study, assignments and practice, this course leads to the SCCM's Diploma in Therapeutic Massage.
The curriculum falls naturally into three overlapping sections spanning both Eastern & Western massage techniques and therapeutic practices;
Therapeutic Massage as Healing Art
Therapeutic Massage as Bodywork
Therapeutic Massage Study & Practice
The course takes a wide overview of both modern clinical methods and traditional holistic medicine to present an unique approach to massage bodywork.
In 2007/2008 the course will be led by James M Alexander, MBACP, MSHP, GCMT, LCSP (Phys) a highly regarded massage therapist and psychotherapist with over 12 years of experience in the field.
Fees: £950. £100 deposit.
