Holistic (also known as Swedish) Massage involves the manipulation of the body’s soft tissue (i.e. the skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments) using the hands in a gentle, flowing massage technique that uses varying degrees of pressure and stretching movements. It is most commonly used for relaxation, improving well-being and lymphatic drainage.
One of the primary goals of Holistic Massage is to speed the venous return of un-oxygenated and toxic blood from the extremities and to shorten recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load in order to relax muscles and improve overall circulation.
Through a sequence of precise strokes the action of this massage technique promotes recovery from stress and prevents the onset of illness. The massage is applied on bare skin using a base lubricant to allow the hands of the practitioner to glide on the skin thus avoiding the sensation of excessive friction. Great care is applied in covering the untreated parts of the recipient using wrapping techniques and thus preserving modesty.
The massage improves circulation, which can help reduces swelling from injury and enhance the efficiency of the lymphatic system controlling the immune response. Massage facilitates the elimination of waste products from tired muscles to relieve aches and pain and breaks adhesions from scar tissue restoring flexibility of motion. Recipients of Holistic Massage experience a sense of relaxation, energy and heightened well-being.
Holistic Massage lasts about an hour.
