Yesterday a young lady came to my Plymouth clinic for her third acupuncture appointment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. She originally came to see me after complaining to one of her work colleagues about her worsening symptoms due to a traumatic divorce and her colleague handed over my card.
This lass is in her early 30's and suffers with textbook IBS symptoms;
Alternating constipation & diarrhoea
Severe cramping
Urgency & fear of not getting to a toilet in time
Bloating
Wind
All symptoms are worse with stress & around the time of her period
Occasional intolerances to certain foods.
She had tried medication from the GP with no improvement and the next step for her would involve exploratory tests which, understandably, she was hoping to avoid.
After her first treatment she felt more relaxed and felt a "...calm detatchment to situations which would normally cause me to explode". Her IBS symptoms had lessened slightly but she was a little unsure whether she was willing that improvement or it was 'real'.
Yesterday she informed me that after the second treatment she had not experienced any discomfort, bowel disturbance, bloating - anything - for a whole week!
As the words came out a look of utter bewilderment passed over her face - "Whatever your pins do, please dont stop!".
You know the funniest thing is, I have been studying this subject for over 11 years, I have a vast library on the subject, I have worked and studied in Shanghai where acupuncture is seen as a way of life, but even now, very occasionally, you may see this look of utter bewilderment pass across my face as I think "Whatever these pins do, please dont ever stop!".
