Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

A Psychotherapist’s Guide to Positive Transformation

By Edward J Longo

My research regarding the workings of the subconscious began more than 25 years ago, which eventually became the catalyst for developing my hypnosis manual called, The Trance Zone. When I realized what I had developed I decided to use it as the basis for my hypnotherapy practice that was formed over ten years ago. During this process I became certified as a board certified hypnotherapist. Later, out of my experiences with human behavior, the observation of complex personalities, and the study of the correlation between the conscious and subconscious mind, I proceeded to develop my course – namely: The Trance Zone Hypnotherapy Course, The Book for Hypnotists, Hypnotherapists and Practitioners. This, along with my hypnosis manual reinforced credibility in having my school become legally certified as, The Trance Zone Hypnotherapy School.

Since then, I have completed another non-fiction book, which I have titled, Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy, A Psychotherapist’s Guide to Positive Transformation. When not busy writing books, or treating patients, I am actively providing my course specifically designed to enable students to become qualified as hypnotherapists. One of the underlying strengths of the course is that The Trance Zone Hypnosis Manual introduces the spiritual state of being, that trance state of mind that is reached when clients “Go Into” into the "Zone," under hypnosis. If you, as hypnotherapist, have concluded that you would treat persons by placing them into a trance state in order to renew their spirits, you would be right. All people are spiritual beings, whether having religious beliefs, or not. And since the spirit is supernatural in essence, it would follow that the mind should be penetrated on a subconscious level, rather than trying to communicate with its earth-based, conscious counterpart.

Since the spirit is a supernatural state of mind it is best reached by bypassing the conscious state – thus allowing the therapist to go directly into the subconscious in order to enable reprogramming. This is because the conscious mind always tends to interfere due to its critical, skeptical, and other negative conditioning. Conversely, the subconscious is the power source, that part of the mind where it becomes possible to link up to our supernatural state.

Just what is a hypnotherapist?  The hypnotherapist is a hypnotherapy practitioner who gains access to the subconscious mind to treat persons for disorders, or mental health issues. The hypnotherapist is actually a therapist who uses hypnosis to induce healing and the two words became combined – hence, the hypnosis therapist became, hypnotherapist. Based on my understanding of the miracles Jesus Christ performed through His remarkable spirit, He possessed, not only the powers of a healer and psychologist, but of a hypnotherapist as well.  What Jesus did, essentially, was to heal and cast out demons, so no matter where He went a miracle was performed.  This was His supernatural gift from God.  The fact that the term “Christ Consciousness.” has evolved makes this even more convincing.  Jesus possessed the highest knowledge of the subconscious mind, as well as having supernatural powers of the highest kind.

Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy:

Acting as an ABH Certified Hypnotherapist, I administer alternative methods designed to aid clients in transforming their minds. Whether these clients wish to stop smoking, drop unwanted pounds or resolve an insomnia problem – or whether they have a mental, physical, or emotional problem I will do everything in my power to assist them. Using one of the most effective hypnosis techniques as specified in The Trance Zone Hypnosis Manual, I strive to resolve any mental disorders, or inner conflicts. Once we get going clients will be able to count on my support for however long it takes. In most instances, unless the issues are complex, this will only take from three to six sessions. Since hypnotherapy works best in the state of relaxation, it is highly recommended that hypnotherapists predispose their clients to exercise, positive affirmations, and guided imagery, as well as listening to tranquil music. In addition to the many wondrous sounds nature has to offer there are the sounds of bowls, beating drums, and running water that can have a peaceful effect on the calming the mind.

Other than Trance and Treatment by Herbert Spiegal there are few books that really go into the depth needed for hypnotherapists, or other professionals to provide solutions to mental health issues. Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy, A Psychotherapist’s Guide to Positive Transformation does just that, and does so exquisitely. In fact, this book on hypnosis and hypnotherapy not only provides solutions to mental health issues, it describes, in detail, how the mind body and brain functions, as well as how to use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - (DSM-IV.) Within the context of this book participants will learn about Manifestations of The Highest Kind, and Magnificent Trance Scripts. Being even more helpful there is information on The Marvelous Autonomic System, and The Wondrous Brain. Just as importantly for the hypnotherapist there are Techniques and Illustrations, and some of the actual hypnotic trance scripts that have been used to treat patients over the past ten years.

Functioning as a hypnotherapist: Through guided imagery positive suggestions will paint images on the subconscious mind. These images will aid in mastering control over lives in creative and ideal ways.  During the process imagery and positive suggestions subjects, or patients, will not become under any control.  Rather, through unleashing the innate subconscious powers, they will become empowered with one of the hypnotherapist’s most powerful tools – hypnotic words.  There is a reason for this: In the state of hypnosis, the subconscious mind becomes fully accessible, processing two hundred million sensory messages every second.  Conversely, in the conscious state, the mind is less than ten percent operational, processing only a handful of instructions at any given time. Nearly all scientists, physicists, and psychologists (especially Carl Jung,) have come to agree that the mind is made up of genes handed down through time by our ancestors.  That being the case, it should explain why going into the subconscious is so effective – because this was precisely where our minds took root and became formulated in the first place.  Tapping into that source is the challenge and the secret to unlocking the true power of our mind – our subconscious mind. And since the subconscious rules our thoughts, this is definitely the place to begin the transformation process.  The secret to tapping the depths of the mind is to go into the subconscious, where the true source of power rules.

Functioning as a hypnotherapist (continued):

Once into the hypnotic trance state, you can unleash the power of the subconscious mind and change negative habits of thought and action into what you desire them to be.  This is where, and how, you can begin reprogramming minds in order to utilize the brain’s unfathomable resources. This highly creative approach to treating patients through hypnosis and hypnotherapy provides an intellectual powerhouse, regarding mastery of the mind.  More importantly, it initiates the total performance of the capabilities of the triune brain. Why should your client’s dream of living a long and happy life continue to be illusive when it is well within their grasp?  The following excerpt from this recent book will be helpful to you, as a hypnotherapist, as well as for your patients:

The best way to longevity is to prevent chronic disease from taking your life prematurely. It may consoling to know that at least one in four people die from a disease that is largely preventable. Usually it is one of the Big Five - heart attacks, strokes, cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. According to what is known as the H factor, there are more than a hundred medical conditions that can be avoided by preventing the cells from aging. Your physiological makeup consists of well over ten trillion cells. Some cells live only a few days others for several months, and millions of immune cells live for years then die and become replaced.

If you can prevent these diseases from occurring – and your chances are excellent if you pursue hypnotherapy – you are likely to add between ten and twenty years to many lives, including your own. One of the greatest shortcomings regarding our health is the failure to check for basic biochemical, immunological, and nutritional imbalances, such as blood sugar and Homocysteine levels. According to the World Health Organization, mental health problems are quickly becoming the number-one health issue of this century.  Ten percent of people worldwide are suffering from mental problems while 25 percent – that’s one-and-a-half billion people – will suffer accordingly at some point in their lives. Depression and Schizophrenia are increasing the world over. Depression is ten times more common today then it was in the 50’s, and is also the primary cause of suicide, claiming 30,000 lives in America and 3,000 in England each year. Depression is now the most common cause of death in persons aged 15 to 24.

By bombarding the subconscious, infiltrating it with new truths, hypnotherapy enables us the power to make changes for the better in our lives.  Because words are especially powerful when spoken audibly, they can instill belief, or discredit belief – thus creating positive, or negative energy.  The most effective way to instill belief is to bypass the conscious mind, which tends to edit, criticize, or restrict information from being processed.  This where hypnotherapy plays an important part: through the use of the hypnotic trance it is possible to deliver positive messages directly into the subconscious. This is where the messages become acknowledged without criticism, or edification – hence, the process of transformation begins to take affect.

Mind-Altering Suggestions:

Through the practice of hypnotherapy it is feasible to break a bad habit, or a degenerative, negative behavior by replacing it with a positive habit. This, in turn, becomes a beneficial, good habit, or positive behavior.  Everyone develops habits, but some are positive, while others can become very negative.  Problems arise when our negative habits control us - for they begin inducing demoralizing and abusive, self-defeating traits. They are called "bad habits" because they are bad for us, personally, and often times just as bad for those around us.   For example, when falling into patterns of negative conditioning, or self-destruction reprogramming our thoughts can be used successfully to alter the defeatist personality. Through the practice of mind-altering suggestions, you will literally learn how to alter personality traits, as well as behavior and negative thought patterns.

Although acknowledging the tiger is unable to change its spots, we, as humans, are able to alter our behavior. One of my most effective affirmations has been an aid to many patients with panic disorders, such as uncontrollable anxiety. For patients, as well as students I have them recite the following mantra over, and over until they feel relief – which nearly always comes: I am the power of the storm, I am the quiet calm within the eye.

For example, to have clients learn how to overcome illness, practice reciting the following trance script:  With your eyes squinted, or closed halfway you are coming into a very deep subconscious state.  Your imagination is free and clear. Here, you are enabled to use the power of your imagination to help you attain whatever it is you need to accomplish.  I command that part of your subconscious that is responsible to restore your original powers.  Now, you are enabled to begin functioning perfectly, just as you were intended to do from the very beginning.  I address all the cells of your being, and command them to restore your depleted powers. I call attention to your healthy cells and instruct them to heal and make you healthy in every way.  These commands to your brilliant cells give them permission to begin your healing process.  The healing process is already working and, in a very short period, the affects shall take place accordingly, dramatically and permanently.

Metabolic Electromagnetic Lightning Therapy:

MELT ™ became created out of the needs of a very gifted patient named “Louisa,” I will simply call her, in order to safeguard her identity. When this woman in her mid-forties came to me she was severely depressed, and had been suffering from the trauma of a serious cancer operation for more than 12 years. In fact, she had been so damaged by the frightening sequence of events doctors had told her the next step would be shock treatment, or a mental institution. She constantly gives thanks to her God because of being helped by my services just when she had given up all hope.

Bibliography:

In addition to being certified as a psychotherapist with The American Association of Psychotherapists, Edward J. Longo also offers individual counseling and therapy for adults in the following areas: stress and depression, fear of public speaking, sexual problems, pain management, health concerns, survivor issues, phobias and anxiety, low self-esteem, habit control, sleep disorders and relationship issues. While to striving to alleviate the known major disorders as per the Surgeon General's Report on Mental Health, he also works to eliminate blocks to motivation, creativity, and self-confidence. Committed to his cause, he often attempts to inspire spirituality by reciting the following mission statement to patients:

Inspire The Injured Spirit And You Can Dissipate Any Disease.

Credibility: My experience also includes exposure with the media: During May of 2001 I was asked to be interviewed by UPN9's I-Team and agreed to giving a private session, where they filmed both myself and one of my patients being hypnotized. The filming went so well my patient's dying cat even became influenced by the power of the intensity of the hypnotherapy session. To all who witnessed it, this off-white-colored cat crawled to its feet, walked up the body of my patient, continued up to her face, and up to where my manual was placed. To everyone’s surprise this seemingly angelic cat, looking like it had already died and risen, began nibbling on the edge of my hypnosis manual. Some of us gasped, while others placed their hands to their mouths watching the cat return to his original dying position. In spite of the amazing wonder, I kept right on performing my hypnosis session. Unfortunately, I could not get a copy of the complete film, although the good news was that my session did finally air on UPN9 News.
