10 Top Tips for Achieving Your Goals & Resolutions!

Career progression, work / life balance, setting up a business, structure to your life after retiring, new hobby….?
When did you last set yourself a goal to achieve? Perhaps a New Year’s resolution? What happened?
Are you missing out on your dreams and goals?

Here are 10 top tips to achieve them.

1. Goals – write them down
…express them positively.
e.g. saying you will stop smoking is not a positive goal. Improving your health & fitness is a positive goal and stopping smoking might be one of the things you do to achieve the goal.

2. Make goals specific
...and timebound
e.g. I will set up my own business by Dec 2007; I will improve my health & fitness this year and to do this I will take up dance lessons in Jan 2007

3. Evidence of achievement
…how will you measure success? Is your goal tangible (e.g. I will have a new computer by end of March 2007) or intangible (e.g. to be more confident – I will deliver a presentation to at least 20 people without breaking into a sweat and get positive feedback from at least 3 independent people).

4. Resources
…what do I have / need to get there?
e.g. time, skills, people, funds

5. Take control
...be proactive and take action
Do something every day to get you closer to your goal.

6. Note the wider implications
…who / what else will be affected?
For example, do you have to give something up in order to achieve your goal?
Who around you will be affected? You, family, friends, work colleagues etc?

7. Action plan
…define the steps in small chunks (with key milestones to mark achievements along the way).

8. Monitor progress
…to ensure you’re on track and enable you to make adjustments to achieve your goal (sometimes things don’t go according to plan).

9. Celebrate
...your achievements on the way

10. Reality check
..on a scale of 1-10, how excited do you feel about achieving your goal?
Consider your goal – what does it really mean to you? How important is it? How does it fit with your values?

Final thought
…anything and everything is possible if you set clear goals and have the courage to pursue them.
