CHEROKEE MEDICINE SERIES
MEDICINE OF THE FOUR DIRECTIONS
WEST MEDICINE and DANDELION and ECHINACEA
DANDELION ECHINACEA (Purple Cone Flower)
The medicine we draw from our planthelpers when we look to the West is beneficial for everything inside the body not seen by the eye. The West is the direction of the Night, the setting Sun. This is also the place of healing waters.
My favorite West Medicine is Dandelion (left). Also shown is Echinacea (right). A wonderful healing herb for the immune system, but it has been used over the years so much it is becoming extinct. Because of the danger of loosing abundance of this planthelper and it commonly causing some allergic reactions, I seldom use this herb. Their on many alternatives available from Mother Earth that we can use as a replacement.
Lets talk about Dandelion. Commonly seen as a weed and unwelcome in a beautiful green lawn, it is an herb that the Cherokee view as a must for "one a day". This wonderful little plant is great for a spring tonic, liver cleanser, diuretic that contains potassium for balance, stimulates the metabolism, aids in digestion, healing for the gall bladder and aids with rheumatism and gout. Naturally sweet, it is great in salads, wonderful addition for any herbal tea blend for sweetness, healing and adds rich color. Wonder why we want to do away with this low growing, beautiful blooming helper. Intrusive it is, but abundant in qualities for our all around healing.
Also a favorite is Burdock. Again, a diuretic, liver tonic, clears the body of poisons making it a commonly used herb for cancers. This wonderful herb is a mild laxative, antibacterial herb, aids in colon complaints, internal bleeding, abdominal pain and digestion. Burdock can cause night sweats, but this makes sense since it is assisting a body cleanse of toxins.
The medicines of the West in your research you will find, all aid in cleansing the body organs of toxins. Mainly the liver and gall bladder, Kidneys and lymphatic system. In this same category you will find many herbs, like Echinacea, that pump up the immunity system, producers of killer cells to eliminate infectious diseases.
reference the book - Cherokee Herbal Medicine by J. Garrett. A wonderful reference for herbal medicine and the way the Cherokee used the directions and herbs for healing.
"The Healing Begins within us so let the healing begin." Aho!
