Trusting Your Body
By Lisa J. Marcus, LMSW, HHC, Brennan Healer
Do you trust your body? Do you believe that your body is an accurate instrument for letting you know what it needs? Do you override your bodys messages to rest, eat, hydrate, breathe, slow down, meditate, move and connect with others? Does your mind and ego play more of a role in determining your self-care than what your body is really asking you for?
Do you get angry, fearful, frustrated, obsessed when your body sometimes breaks down, has cravings, becomes sick and is always changing. After all, YOU know better –I will eat this food, I will do this type of exercise, I will work this many hours, I will figure out how to change this. The commonality here is will. Joylessly willing our body to do anything is a slow soul death. To the extreme, a deep distrust of the body results in anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders.
The healing response to distrust of your body is surrender. Surrender does not mean doing nothing. It means unconditional love and acceptance of what is. When your child has the flu, do you love her any less? Do you tell her that her body isn’t working properly? You comfort her. View your body, its cravings, pain, illness, energy shifts as expressions of its need for comfort and love. Make healing choices from that place. Your body does not have words, only symptoms by which to communicate with you. Learn your bodys unique language, it is unlike anyone elses. Trust its perfection!
