The Healing Art of Hypnotherapy
By Linda Wilson
Hypnotherapy has been around for over 4,000 years. In both Ancient Greece and Egypt, Sleep Temples were built, otherwise known as Dream Temples. These temples were used as hospitals for the day, healing people by placing them in a hypnotic state and analysing their dreams to determine the relevant treatment. It was said that people were freed from incurable diseases by the healing power of dream. The temples were known as places of magic; spiritual & mysterious; places to find physical & mental healing.
Usually made of marble, the temples contained inscriptions describing the healings and cures that had previously taken place, giving hope to the sick, and those seeking help.
Those looking for a cure were called ‘seekers’. Seekers often demanded a cure to an ailment, issue or inner imbalance. They were 'seeking' to contact the gods to gain an insight in to healing, or to be guided or comforted.
Priests, by means of chants and rituals, would put the ‘seekers’ into a trance like state, which could last for up to 3 days. This was to enable the ‘seeker’ to contact the gods, through dreams, by the power of suggestion, therefore helping them to obtain a cure.
Part physician, part shaman, the priests had preserved the power of dreams from ancient times, and were highly skilled at administering herbal medicines and dream interpretation.
The Keepers of the Temples (attendants/caretakers) also had an important part to play. They ensured the ‘seekers’ were cleansed, purified and ready for the Sleep Sessions, by discussion and counselling, in preparation. The ‘seekers’ had to wait until they were ready, before entering the Sleep Temples. They first had to learn the rituals of cleansing the body, mind and soul. Then, through dreams, they would recognise the signs, and know the time was right.
Sleep & Dream Temples still exist today, in some parts of the world.
The Power of Suggestion has evolved since 4000BC, but is still used today in many forms of therapy, mostly Hypnotherapy.
Hypnotherapy has been proven to help many different issues and problems, from psychological to physical. From skin conditions to panic attacks, phobias and addictions, just as it was many years ago.
