A Trouble Shared

By Penny Samuels

Perhaps you are familiar with the saying, “A trouble shared is a trouble halved”? Are you lucky enough to have experienced how true that can be? Do you regularly share your deepest, darkest troubles and fears with your friends, family, or work colleagues?

If you don’t share, there may be something preventing you from doing so. These are the most common reasons cited for not sharing:

  • Being afraid of being judged, and perhaps be found wanting.
Being wary of burdening loved ones when they already have much to bear.
Needing an impartial opinion and realising you probably wouldn’t receive one.
The matter is too personal to be discussed with somebody you know.
It seems too selfish to talk about yourself.
The concern that you may be offered bad advice.
Being so caught up in your problem that you can’t “see the wood for the trees”?
  • These days, everybody seems to be so wrapped up in their own concerns and worries. Nobody has time to sit and listen. People are too distracted by their mobile phones, iPods, PDAs, laptops and emails, or even watching TV wherever they are.

For many in society today, gone are the days when families would rally round to offer comfort and support in times of trouble. In addition, many older people haven’t been brought up to talk about their personal problems, and may feel shame or embarrassment in doing so.

In these cases, a non-judgmental, professional ‘stranger’ such as a psychotherapist, clinical hypnotherapist, or counsellor can often be of great assistance; trained men and women who listen to your concerns, fears, problems, and issues, and offer sound guidance, advice, and therapy when you most need it.

Once such sympathetic, listening ear is Penny Samuels, Ivybridge-based Psychotherapist and Clinical Hypnotherapist. Penny offers you her wealth of experience in a comfortable, quiet, friendly environment, where your confidentiality is respected and guaranteed.

No problem is too great, or too trivial. If it is causing you anguish, it needs addressing. Unburdening yourself in this way can provide great relief. And bringing a new outlook, a fresh mind, and possibly undreamed-of solutions can often help a problem be resolved completely.
