I've quit my job to save the planet

By Carl

Could there be a worse time to resign from a well-paid job in order to follow my heart, conscience and intuition, and trust that everything will work out? Probably not.

Have we, the human race, got time to waste - in the face of environmental, economic and social catastrophe? I think not.

When I took on my most recent and lucrative contract, I made a verbal agreement with my employer that I would leave if it ever felt like a job. It did, so I've just quit. Whilst doing that job (creating a web-based, conscious living network – www.copperstrings.com), it became clear that we are on the edge of potentially disastrous global changes, that through denial and despair, we are hopelessly failing to address. I'm now in no doubt that we are past choice.

In essence, we (in our industrialised 'civilisations') cannot continue to live the way we do, and expect to survive; the way we live is actually killing us. “I'm too busy”, “I don't believe it” or “I've got bills to pay” are no longer logical (or morally defensible) responses, if we want to give future generations a life worth living. And forget the people in power. They will not save you and sort this mess out; they are part of the problem. So what are YOU doing about it?

Job-based living and our primary pursuit of money is a disease afflicting and killing the human spirit. From cradle to grave, human life is now commoditised to such an extent that we are seriously (I'd say terminally) sick – at the very least physically, mentally, emotionally, educationally and socially. This way of life works only some of the time for some of the people – it's insane. We should change it. Who could deny that we have lost our way?

So what am I doing? Basically, I'll be creating a more resilient, self-sufficient and sustainable local lifestyle (before I – before ALL of us - are forced to do so by the environmental, economic and social turbulence that's unfolding daily).

Specifically, I'll be:
- Growing, making and sharing food in my local community
- Taking responsibility for my health, well-being, education and lifestyle impact
- Starting the www.iquitmyjobtosavetheplanet.com blog, for anyone who knows they should be breaking free and making a difference, and wants to get on with it
- Developing the Exeter Eco-fayre (eco-friendly products at the easy reach of everybody)
- Exploring a pure water and fresh produce delivery service in Exeter
- Developing www.newexeter.com - a resource for creating a local, sustainable & enjoyable life in Exeter
- Starting a New Exeter radio show on Phonic.fm, - Exeter’s local independent radio station
- Continuing collaboration with the Transition movement – www.transitionculture.org
- Giving talks & writing articles on the 4 Crunches - Credit crunch, Carbon crunch (climate and peak oil), Communication crunch and Consciousness crunch
- Living and loving life to my fullest potential, serving my community

If you resonate with this blessed unrest as someone put it, please get in touch. In the times ahead we will have to work together and support each other if we are to stand a chance of changing our course to a saner, more beautiful, and sustainable world. I need your help. We need each other...

Carol - I salute you. :) I have often wondered in the past if there is anything I can personally do to help the Planet - the despair that I feel that the problem is just too BIG can be overwhelming. :) However, I've realised that there is an awful lot I can do. In my opinion, your own checklist should be posted in every school around the Country! Ha. :)

As well as being more aware as far as growing and making food, etc, I also believe we have a responsibility to work on ourselves and raise our vibrations. I also quit my 'normal' job around 12 months ago, and I'm doing what resonates with me and brings me pleasure. It's not easy and my income has plummeted - but I get by, with the support of my husband, friends and family.

I now hope to start a course of Workshops this year, sharing what I've learned and helping others to heal and (ultimately) evolve their consciousness.

Thanks, Carl - your words are very inspiring.
Karen
