Essential Oils indicated for chronic sinus infections in Down syndrome

By Maria G. Turchi

Young Living Essential Oils are my medicine cabinet. My family, which is my husband, daughter (16) and son  (11) do not use any pharmaceutical drugs, not even Tylenol. Last year the school nurse told me that Alex was healthier than most of the children he is with. Alex is in a public school and missed only one day for the entire year. My daughter did not miss any school. Here is our story:

Alex is eleven years old and has Down syndrome. He  had chronic sinus infections since the age of four. Due to Alex’s head shape, his pediatrician told me that there was nothing that could be done about the infections. Alex would have to live with the constantly dripping nose and resultant illness until hopefully his skull would change and he would outgrow the problem.

I had tried many different approaches including acupuncture, nutritional changes and kinesiology. All gave some immediate relief but after three years there was still no healing. Alex was so congested that he was snorting and snoring at night and having some periods of apnea where he would stop breathing for a short period of time. His nostrils were constantly red and sore from the dripping mucus and nose blowing.

I took a class at my local Adult Education which was healing through Aromatherapy/Essential Oils. The decision I made to take that class has brought about life changing results for myself and my family.

If you have never heard of Essential Oils here is a short explanation of what they are. Essential oils are the volatile liquids that are distilled from various parts of plants, including seeds, bark, leaves, stems, roots, flowers and fruit. They are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs. The essential oils of the plant and the human blood share several common properties: They fight infection, contain hormone-like compounds, and initiate regeneration. Working as the chemical defense mechanism of the plant, essential oils possess potent antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. The molecules of essential oils are also relatively small, giving them the ability to easily penetrate the cells. When topically applied to the feet or elsewhere, essential oils can travel throughout the body in a matter of minutes.

Young Living is the firmly established leader in the Essential Oils Industry. It is the only company of it's kind that grows from seed, harvests in greenhouses, distills and packages to make sure that there are no pesticides or chemicals of any kind in the product so you are getting Grade A Pure Organic Essential Oils. If you look at other oils in health food stores, they are only perfume quality and not Therapeutic (medicine)...

Here's what I did with Alex:

First I put a blend called Valor on his feet. This blend helps to balance electrical energies in the body. He loves the smell and Valor is still his favorite oil. It helps promote courage, confidence, and self-esteem.

Next I used Myrtle oil and painted it around his nostrils. I also put a drop in honey and he takes it for coughs.

Next I used R. C. oil and painted it over his forehead and around his eyes, on the sinus. Also put 2 drops on his chest and throat. This is a blend of (4) different kinds of eucalyptus and other oils. This blend breaks up mucus, in the head, the lungs and anywhere else it builds up. This helps to drain down anything in the sinus cavities.

I also used a drop of Peppermint on his tongue which immediately opens his nose and facilitates better breathing.

I purchased a Young Living diffuser and diffused Purification Oil into his room at night. I have the diffuser on a timer that goes off every two hours for 15 minutes. Any molds and allergy causing bacteria in the air cannot live in the presence of this oil.  I also diffuse Peace & Calming to help Alex sleep at night.

After a week he was breathing so much better and within three months the snorting and snoring were gone. I still enjoy the quietness while walking by his bedroom at night.

As time has passed, there has been a process of deeper healing. Alex’s health has improved to where it is no longer an issue.  I have used different oils to facilitate these next stages of healing. I started using Thieves and Immupower on his feet. Whenever he starts to get yellowish mucus I use Raven oil blend on his chest and back. This takes the infection away within hours.

I have learned a lot by reading the Essential Oils Desk Reference – which is a must to start working with the oils. The process has been one of discovery and learning. The result has been that my son  within 12 months was totally relieved of his sinus infections and now I have tools that I can use for myself and my whole family for specific problems as well as preventative care. My husband now asks for the Thieves oil whenever anything is “going around the office”.
