Do you have Soul Space?

By Susanna Bellini

What is soul space?
You have soul space:

  • v
  • When you have time and space to express your creativity, and access inspiration.

  • v
  • When you have time and space for meditation, contemplation and for experiencing your spirituality.

  • When you are living your life’s purpose. / you are in the right place, at the right time / involved in the right kind of deeply satisfying work for you.

How you will be when you have soul space?
Words like these might describe you :

    Calm, balanced, grounded, relaxed
    Spiritual
    Creative, purposeful
    Inspired and inspirational
Connected to your Higher Purpose and Higher Self

How do you get soul space?

  • Make some time for yourself each day. Spend it meditating, quietly relaxing, walking in the countryside, sitting in silence. Spend this time alone and quietly - Switch off background distractions such as your mobile, radio or TV. Go to alpha level, to a relaxed, clear, contemplative, meditative frame of mind. The idea is to have quiet time where you are simply open and receptive to inner thoughts and guidance.

  • Take some time to simply practice breathing deeply - belly breathing - slow and comfortable. You can do this wherever you are, it will calm and centre you, as well as bringing more oxygen into your system to help you think clearly.

  • Take up drawing, painting or any other creative or physical activity (where your mind can roam over other thoughts freely). Mind map, doodle, make something. Driving a familiar route, or travelling by train are also good examples of activities that allow your brain to freewheel. Keep a recording device or pen and paper nearby to record your ideas and insights.

  • Have an area of personal space that is just yours, and make it special to you. If you have only a small space, make an altar for yourself. This can have things to do with your spiritual beliefs and practice, or it can simply have beautiful and special things personal to you. If you don’t like the term “altar”, call it a Happiness Corner or anything else you like.

o Put reminders of happy things here - e.g. photos, flowers, crystals.
o You can put things representing goals you are working towards too, such as a picture of the place you want to go on holiday, or a photo of yourself the last time you looked slim, fit and well, if you want to lose weight.

  • If you have more space, perhaps you can have a whole room to turn into a sanctuary for yourself alone, together with your partner or for all of your family. You can put things you like to do in it, decorate it as you wish, make it a special, relaxing space - this is not the place for the TV or for eating meals. Or you may prefer to have this outside - a special corner of your garden, or your whole garden.

Make sure that you do wonderful, special things in this space, so that it fills with good feelings and positive energies.

This is a place you can be for relaxation, meditation, yoga, tai chi, creative activities such as art, music, hobbies. It can be for family conversation, dreaming and planning, for playing and laughter. Fill it with reminders of the spiritual, beautiful, special things that are meaningful for you.

  • If you can’t create personal, private space in your environment, you can create such a space in your mind and visit it when you meditate. You can decorate and furnish it in your imagination in any way you want. The great thing is that this inner space* has no limits except the boundaries of your imagination.

  • However it is a good idea to create something physical, even if you don’t have much space. You could buy a box you can lock and put photos and small magical, special things inside it, representative of the important things, spiritual things, goals and aspirations that are most meaningful to you. This kind of portable space/altar/focus is great for when you travel - especially if you travel a lot - it feels like taking ‘home’ with you and helps you stay centred and on purpose wherever you are.

We all need our own private and personal soul space - make sure you create yours and spend time there - you’ll benefit enormously in terms of health, peace of mind, creativity, well-being, serenity, balance, ability to handle stress and actively enjoy life.
