RETURNING TO PEACE

By Indira Ann Parsons, MSW

WHAT COSTUME DO YOU HABITUALLY WEAR?

Stress comes not so much from the world, but from the way we think about and deal with the world. Much of our suffering is due to the unconscious habits that control and dictate our lives.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines a habit as:
1. a pattern of behavior acquired by frequent repetition;
2. customary pattern or practice;
3. an addiction;
4. a distinctive dress or costume.

What costume do you habitually wear? A pattern of behavior acquired by frequent repetition may be pulling your neck muscles tight, giving you back pain, making you shout at someone you love. When we become aware of an unhealthy pattern, it begins to lose its power over us.

Step out of the costume of stress and tension! Put on new clothes or just go naked. Read your lessons and let them reveal your true nature. Old habits will jump in because they are addictions, but you do not have to let them control you!

When we are tense, our breathing changes. This impacts us physiologically, emotionally, and mentally. Letting go of stress can be as simple as consciously returning breath to its natural rhythm.

Here is a simple exercise that can help you handle stressful situations and return to peace. You can practice this meditation whenever you need to regain your equilibrium.

BREATH MEDITATION

Consciously bring your attention to your breath. Notice how you are breathing, how your body is feeling, and what you are thinking. Now begin to count your breaths 1, 2, 3, 4—in a gentle, rhythmic way, and then begin again. When you find that your mind has strayed, gently bring it back to counting. If you use a mantra, prayer, or rosary, you may like to synchronize this with your breathing until you feel calm. Find a method that works for you and repeat it in peaceful times and in stressful times, until it becomes a habit—a healthy habit!
