Seasonal Sovereignty

By Kimberley Jones

Wow! Christmas fever is in full swing. I’m sure I saw the first glimmer of tinsel somewhere back in September! I will always love Christmas, despite the fashion for cynicism, simply for the miracle of hearts opening.

People are asking: “So what are you doing for Christmas & New Year?”

The key word here is ‘doing’. At a time when our bodies & minds are starting to slow down, retreating into our inner cave of winter healing we are queuing up for shiny paper & transformers! The cultural expectation is huge at this time of year.

When I was younger my Mum went bananas for Christmas, huge tree with lights & all the trimmings, mountains of presents & roast potatoes. She was a single Mum who pulled out all the stops. My hero. My partner’s Mum was just the same so Christmas means something particular to both of us. Sadly this year is the first Christmas where neither of us have our Mum’s to share it with.
So what do you do? What do you do when the last thing you feel like doing is sitting & looking at the empty chair?
We could start by asking:

Am I doing what I really want to be doing this Year?
Have I got into a rut of pleasing everyone else or am I simply rebelling against the status quo?
Do I remember what this season is about?

One year I chose to spend Christmas on my own without contact with anyone. I had the space & peace to connect with what Christmas had been, what it was for me in that moment & what the turning of the New Year represented. In the silence I connected with the love that was washing through group consciousness & a question bubbled up inside me:

“How good can it get?”

Our consciousness is saturated with the culture of “look how bad things are” & the latest one of “look how bad things are going to get”, so it was hugely empowering for me to consider how madly brilliant things might get if I just allowed myself a moment of sovereignty & original thought.

This season is a time to honour ourselves as limitless beings of spirit & energy having a physical experience. We are limited only by what we can allow ourselves to imagine is possible. So when you are considering your New Year’s resolutions maybe you can start by asking of the new year:

“How GOOD can it get?”
